Shogun Fights Takes a Shot at The South Florida MMA Market

South Florida played host to Shogun Fights event on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in Hollywood, Fla. at the resort’s new Hard Rock Event Center. The Hard Rock Event Center is the newly constructed 3,500-seat venue located in the northwest corner of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood. As part of the $1.5 billion property expansion, the existing Hard Rock Live arena will be razed in March 2018 and replaced with a state-of-the-art 6,500-plus-seat venue in a theater-style configuration, slated to open in 2019. This event marks the 3rd Pro-MMA event in Florida for 2018.

Shogun Fights were quoted in saying “We couldn’t be happier to be bringing Shogun Fights to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood. The groundwork we’ve laid in the Mid-Atlantic and world-class product we’ve built with Shogun Fights is tailor-made for a red-hot TV market like Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. The show will be big, and the fights will be great – this we promise you.”

As I looked around the arena, watching closely their production, their cage set up and their overall presentation, I can say that they truly delivered on their promise. Lets note a few things they got right while taking a chance in South Florida…a market where Dana White will no longer visit, since their last UFC event back in 2012. Dana was quoted in saying “it was the worst gate in UFC history“! But to Dana’s defense, he loved the Seminole HardRock Live Events Venue. UFC had 4 UFC Fight night events their from 2006 to 2015.

  • First, the event started on time, like clockwork. The event scheduled to start at 7pm, after the national anthem the fighters touched gloves at 7:09pm.
  • Second, it was well organized. Scott Viscomi, Director of Sales and Marketing made sure that media was well taken care of and provided the necessary components for media to do their jobs.
  • 11 Fights on the card that lasted till 11:00pm – did not drag on to the early part of the morning. Just enough fights to keep the crowd entertained. 8 out of the 11 finished in the 1st round, so that also played a part on getting out early. The other 3 fights ended in a decision.

Fighter Selection

In regards to the fights, how was the match up? Did they use Florida fighters or out of towner’s? Did they use Florida fighters that were local to the Broward County Area ?

They also got it right when it came to fighter’s selection in regards to ticket sales. They had local gyms involved that brought a few fan favorites. It was clear from the roars and the cheers when local favorite Danny Chaves of MMA Masters entered the cage. As well as Fred Moncaio from the Moncaio Brothers school in Ft. Lauderdale. There were others like Benny Delgado of BlackHouse MMA (Miami) and Christian Lepe out of Cape Coral Florida who had their fan section represent them for this event. As far as match up’s…one might argue why the majority of  fights ended in the 1st round. Either way, the ending of the fights had a mixture of KO’s , and Submissions that left the crowd satisfied.

Attendance

Shogun Fights makes their debut in South Florida with 2300 fans in attendance. This marks the first MMA event in Florida with the most fans in attendance for 2018. The event was originally a CFFC event and was switched out for another Alliance MMA company – Shogun Fights. Ticket sales might have hurt during the change of promotions. For example, tickets were still being sold as CFFC on cagetix.com instead of Shogun Fights. You would have had to known that CFFC was Shogun Fights when you bought your ticket.

Will Shogun Fights return to South Florida ?

They are quoted in saying “South Florida has always been a target for us at Alliance and now we’re here to deliver. The opportunity laid out with Shogun Fights and Hard Rock is astonishing. Just like up north, we’re going to give the fans an experience like no other at the regional level while working towards our goal of launching prospects to the big show. It’s our pleasure to work with Hard Rock in Florida to allow us to do what we do.”
